    Author: Mark Baxter

Funny how life works. Teaching feels as natural to me as the wave in my hair. Yet, forty years ago when I was performing for a living I completely rejected teaching as a prospect. I credit the impending birth of my son for inspiring me to reconsider. Thirty years later teaching has blessed me with a deep connection to thousands of singers and a sense of purpose that defines my life. My approach with students is based on a premise that singing is innate, so my work focuses on cognitive disinhibition. That's a fancy way of saying I use vocal exercises to unscramble disruptive thoughts and beliefs. And I certainly have a lot of experience with disruptive thoughts - starting with my early beliefs about teaching!
